Covid-19 hit our farm

Writer's picture: Jill StidhamJill Stidham

And just like that, we’re back! In July my entire family tested positive for Covid-19. It sent my husband to the hospital, and I basically slept for a week. We are so appreciative of the prayers and the grocery drop-offs during our quarantine. Throughout our quarantine, it rained about 9” and the weeds went crazy. We are working on getting the farm under control again now that we can get out and about. This is our first week back at our markets and I’ve been back designing at the Blossom Shop, so we are getting close to normal.

August is a crucial month for us as it is the end of our 2021 planting season and the beginning of our 2022 one. This week I will be sowing more sunflowers that should be ready in October, and starting cool flowers such as bachelors’ buttons, snapdragons, stock, ammi, dara, rudbeckia, bupleurum, larkspur, Love-in-a-Mist, freesia and more. Hopefully, this lineup will produce flowers in October and November then overwinter to produce blooms earlier in spring 2022. The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are my favorite time to grow flowers and I will be focusing on blooms that flourish in the cooler weather. Each week I will be writing a blog post about the flowers we grow or plan to grow for the 2022 growing season, so keep an eye out for our monthly newsletter to learn more about the blooms we lovinly grow here at Titus Creek!

August also is the month we start pulling drip tape off spent sunflowers, cut the stocks to ground level and tarp the beds to prepare them for the 2022 growing season. I'm look forward to the work ahead and the hope that it brings!

Until next time, keep spreading joy!

Jill
