This growing season has just flown by! As we have turned our calanders from September to October our thoughts have also turned to preparing the flower farm for winter and planning for the 2021 growing season. It seems like the list of October chores is neverending. Clean up is the most important as leaves and blooms left on the ground may carry diseases and provide a habitat for pests to stay for the winter. This is also a good time to repair anything that needs fixed.
Shyanne and I have been huddled around the dinning room table planning the design of the flower farm for the upcoming growing season. It seems strange to be thinking of what we want to plant where, but the fall planted bulbs need to be in the ground soon, ideally by the end of the month. Besides planning, the biggest chore we have to do is taking down all the beds we labored over this summer. Even though we are still a small flower farm, we had 39 beds in production with seven of those still active.
Anyway, the rest of the beds are slowly being winterized and our field is beginning to look barren and empty. The hoops, netting, and other support structures are finally down and Shyanne has been mowing the remenants of summer a little more each day, it's bittersweet.
