Valentine's Day Roses: Why are they so expensive?

Writer's picture: Jill StidhamJill Stidham

There are many factors that affect the cost of roses leading up to Valentine’s Day, the biggest of these being supply and demand. Did you know that 250 million roses are produced for Valentine’s Day each year? That's a lot of roses! Growing conditions also effect the cost of your roses. Each year for weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day growers must cut back stems to encourage a bumper crop of blooms in time for Valentine’s Day. Once Valentine’s has passed the roses will not produce buds for several weeks causing a dip in supply which in turn causes the cost to rise. Transportation costs also play a role in the price of your roses as many are grown in South America and have to be flown into the US.

However, there are American roses, mostly grown in California, that range in price from $4.50 to $6 per stem or more. I did not order these this year as I wanted to make certain I had specific varieties of roses for our Valentine's Pop-Up Flower Shop. As such, I have chosen to source your roses from RIO Roses and Eco Roses located in sub-tropical Ecuador and Columbia. These farms offer beautiful hybrid tea roses such as the red Freedom roses and lavender Blueberry roses that were so very popular at last year's shop.

By now you may be asking what are we doing to bring domestic roses to your table? Beginning in 2021, we are adding roses to the flowers that we grow on the farm. However, they will not be ready to harvest for at least 3 years. In the meantime, we are currently searching for American farms that provide beautiful blooms that can be harvested all year around for a competitive price.

Until next time, keep spreading joy!

Jill
